Submission Guidelines

Submission Guidelines: The Banner welcomes submissions from all members of the mathematics education community, not just MCTM members. All submissions should be relevant, interesting, and useful to teachers of mathematics in Maryland.
Most submissions fit one of these three genres, but other formats are welcome:
  • Lesson Seed
    • The basis for a lesson, often includes "student ready" materials.
  • Application of Research to Practice
    • Applications of research-based ideas to classroom practice.
  • Research Brief
    • Teacher-friendly summary of research results.
Before submitting, please check:
  • All identifying information has been removed from the manuscript.
  • Figures, tables, and graphs are embedded in the manuscript.
  • APA has been used throughout the manuscript with references listed at the end.
  • Student materials are "student ready."
  • Manuscript is double-spaced, has one-inch margins, and uses 12 point font.
  • Manuscript is up to 8 pages long.
  • Manuscript has not been previously published and is not currently under consideration by any other journal.
To submit a manuscript, please complete the form found here and upload your manuscript when directed to do so.
Review Process: Manuscripts are sent out to other mathematics educators for anonymous review, and this process often takes several months. If you have questions about the status of your manuscript during this time, please feel free to contact the editor, Christy Graybeal at graybeal@hood.edu.

Photographs: Please note that photographs require signed releases to be published; if your article is accepted, it will be your responsibility to get the appropriate signatures. A sample release form can be found here. Other forms are acceptable.

Looking for support? Here is a video created by NCTM about how to transform an idea into an article. NCTM has also created a video about common writing pitfalls and easy fixes. Ming Tomayko and Stew Saphier have volunteered to read early drafts and provide informal feedback.

Questions: If you have any questions, please contact the journal editor, Christy Graybeal, at graybeal@hood.edu.
