Exploring Fractions Concepts with Virtual Fraction Bars Drew Polly, University of North Carolina Charlotte
Abstract Virtual manipulatives have potential to transform mathematics teaching and learning when technology is used to support activities that include mathematical reasoning and higher-level thinking. This article provides two lesson seeds (vignettes) related to fourth grade students’ use of virtual fraction bars. The virtual fraction bars provided opportunities for students to efficiently represent word problems involving fractions and then reason about their representations that they created.
